I started making artist teddy bears around 10 years ago, I was
already a keen collector, particularly old bears with their appealing
expressions and nostalgic charm - these were the inspiration to
attempt my own creations. I crafted my own patterns from scratch so
that the bears would not simply look like just another traditional
jointed bear; instead I wanted to capture the very essence of the
antique “well loved” teddy.
Hence, my use of distressed or sparse mohair, wood-wool and pellet
stuffing. The stuffing in particular adds that special crunchy feel
that is so magical....In addition beige felt is used for the pads with
embroidered claws.
All my bears have plain black eyes. These are genuine boot buttons
(when I can get hold hold of them.....as they are very rare) or
plastic that is sprayed and then matted to resemble old eyes. The
muzzles are clipped back and the noses are embroidered in black
thread.
Because of my other commitments I no longer supply teddy bear
shops and mainly just make the odd commission here and there. I do try
to make sure there are always one or two in my own shop.
